Hens and Egg Heads

A team of Key Stage 2 pupils (known as ‘Egg Heads’) run a small enterprise project, looking after our hens and selling eggs to parents, staff and members of the local community.  The hens have a large, permanent enclosure generously funded by a community grant from Bristol Airport.  They also have a a 20m extension run full of trees and shrubs which is an ideal environment to promote their natural behaviour to scratch and explore for food.  They are only let into the extension run when school is open as it is not fox-proof!

Pupils from Years 3 to 6  join the ‘Welfare Team’ and the ‘Egg Sales’ teams.  Their rota of duties is organised by Egg Head Team Leaders.  Eggs are sold by the pupils weekly after school on a Friday - please support ussmiley

As part of our School Values theme on Social Responsibility we have re-homed commercial battery and barn hens to join our flock.

Enrichment activity -treat ball full of meal worms

The hens are in lockdown too! Since December the hens have not been allowed out of their enclosure due to avian flu. They have also been getting fed up and bored with not being able to go out. So we have bought them a few treats to cheer them up. This is their favourite - a ball with 2 small holes and full of their favourite snack - dried meal worms! When they roll it around a worm falls out and they gobble it up! One hen is being rather greedy and is not so good at sharing.....

New Hens - They do like to jump onto the fence!

Hens out and about - can you tell where they are exploring?
